Malta UNESCO Youth Association has received an invitation to send two paticipants to a project called “Today's Youth...Tomorrow's Citizens (TYTC)” in the frame of Europe for Citizens measure 2.3. The project “Today's Youth...Tomorrow's Citizens (TYTC)” want to send an important message to EU citizens: “take an active role in society for your future and the future of the society itself”. We don’t’ want EU citizens waiting at the window (or on facebook) and expecting others to decide for them but we want them to wake up from their “civic sleep” thinking not just to what EU can do for them but firstly to what they can do for EU. The project will realize a transnational seminar focusing on the following topics: - European active citizenship - volunteering - youth employment - youths and politics One of the strength points of the project is the Intercultural dialogue: TYTC will involve 66 participants coming from 30 States ( 27 EU members + 3 candidate countries) in a way to deal with issues in a broad comparative perspective and find common solutions while ensuring maximum impact to the project. Each debate each speech will be carried out respecting all the cultures. The comparison between different cultures will show to the participants that each culture can be different in something from the others, but all of them have common values and that’s important to build a “common Europe”. The participants will understand that European Union has not to be constituted of Italians, French, Spanish etc....but of “European citizens”. The seminar will take place in Sciacca (in the south - east cost side of Sicily) and one day in Mussomeli . It will last five days from 12th – 17th September 2011. Each organization will take part with 2 participants. No limit age for the participants. Travel costs (airplane and means of transports) will be reimbursed at 70%. Food and accommodation will be totally covered 100%.
Active Ingredients – Cooking in a Melting Pot, was an exchange which took place in the wonderful and stunning area of the Mazury Lakes In Poland from the 13th to 22nd June 2011. It saw the participation of 30 other youths coming from 3 different youth organisations in Europe, namely Membrillos por el Mundo an organisation from Cordoba Spain, Malta Unesco Youth Association from Malta and the hosting organisation from Warsaw Poland. On 12th June, when we, the 7 maltese participants landed in Poland we had a first day for ourselves in Krakow, since we had decided to spend a Sunday together to get to know each other better. This was a very good idea because it served to break the ice through the smallest of things, even deciding together where we wanted to visit and what we wanted to see. Even though all of us had different tastes and opinions, we spent a very nice day together touring the city’s attractions. In the long run, this did us a lot of good in terms of team-building and preparing us for the week ahead! The day after we headed out to Warsaw by train to meet all the other participants from Poland and Spain. What impressed us in the group was that all of them were such nice and warm-hearted people; you immediately felt like you knew them forever. We had cooking workshops including basic kitchen practises. We had to work in team from the 3 countries and this help alot for the 30 participants to be able to work with each other. Almost none of the participants have ever worked in a kitchen, but creativity and imagination have led to wonderful meals everyday both for lunch and dinner. Other workshops that we had, was on preparing serviettes according to the occasion, the history of ingredients in europe and worldwide. It amazing to know the history and origin of certain ingredients, as we now take for granted. In truth there are vast stories behind every ingredient and mixtures we do have in every kitchen, most of which include ancient cultures and explorers who discovered these things and exported them globally. We also had the opportunity to have a demonstration of how polish cottage cheese is made... the smell is not that nice but we must say that the taste is better than the smell. Activities apart from the cooking workshops were fantastic, including the canoeing trip around the lake, the daily energizers and games, lakeside cookout and the rest! Each country had the opportunity to participate in the intercultural evenings spread over 3 evenings. As usual the maltese team had loads of food and drinks to share with others. We also had the opportunity to participate in a local festival in Milki where we meet locals, played beach volley and shared our own traditional food, which indeed poles like our qassatat (which we prepared in the morning), maltese bread and beer we must say! We must say that the exchange was very well-organised by Magda and Giovann, a Maltese chef who managed the cooking workshops – a sincere thank you from all the group! We have the pleasure to inform you that UNESCO has launched a new campaign “Kizuna” to send messages of solidarity for the Tsunami affected schools’, children and teachers of Japan who need moral support from the world.
There are numerous international organizations that are engaged in campaigns for fund-raising for the victims. However, the 'Kizuna Campaign', spearheaded by the National Federation of UNESCO Association in Japan (NFUAJ) is unique in the sense that it addresses the need for addition psychological care for children who lost their parents, houses and schools. For the details, please refer to the site below, which is available in all the UN languages. http://www.unesco.org/new/en/media-services/single-view/news/kizuna_a_message_of_hope_for_japans_school_children/ Although any child or teacher can send a postcard by him/herself, we would appreciate it if you could encourage schools to collect and send the messages in a package or box as it would facilitate our ‘out-end collaborator’ the Sendai UNESCO Association distributing to the destination. Should any school need help for shipment, please send the cards to their nearest UNESCO field office (contacts details: http://www.unesco.org/new/en/bfc/all-offices/), and they would forward them to the Sendai UNESCO Association. Attached please also find the press release on the Kizuna Campaign in six languages, which we would appreciate it if you could relay to the media in your country. Section of National Commissions and Related Networks ----- The Japanese word ‘Kizuna’ means solidarity or tie. UNESCO has adopted the word for a new campaign. School children from around the world are being asked to write a message of hope on a postcard. The aim is for each of the thousands of school children who were affected by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit northeast Japan on 11 March, to receive a postcard as an act of solidarity. On that fateful day over 7000 schools were destroyed or damaged by the Tsunami, mostly in the coastline area of Tohoku region. In one tragic case among many, more than 70 percent of pupils were swept away by the tsunami. The remaining 30 percent of children in that particular school are understandably traumatized as are thousands of other school children in the region. Many children lost everything - their parents, friends, houses and schools. Many more continue to live in shelters. Sending some words of hope or drawing a picture symbolizing friendship on a postcard, shows these children that they have not been forgotten. “The word Kizuna conveys a powerful message of unity. It also embodies the strength of our cooperation with Japan over the past 60 years,” says Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO. “Our conviction is that reconstruction, both physically and psychologically, must start with education, with schools, students and teachers.” The Sendai branch of the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan (NFUAJ) will collect the postcards and then distribute them to school children and teachers in the affected region of Japan. Three educational institutions in the Sendai Region will also help logistically with the Kizuna Campaign - Tohoku University, Miyagi University of Education and Sendai Shirayuri Women's College. The first NFUAJ club was created in Sendai in 1947. This grassroots movement led to the creation of the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan (NFUAJ) the following year, and it paved the way for Japan’s full membership of UNESCO in May 1951. Today there are 300 UNESCO Associations and Clubs in Japan and a further 5,000 throughout the world that carry out volunteer activities in the regions where they have taken root. ***** Postcards should be sent before 31 July, 2011 and addressed to: Sendai UNESCO Association 1-2-2 Oomachi, Aoba-ku, Sendai City, 980-0804 JAPAN Messages should include: The sender’s name, sex, age and address Indicate whether the sender is a student or teacher A written message or a picture Be written in an official UN language or Japanese If participating as a school or class, we encourage schools to collect and send the postcards in one big envelope or box to facilitate the coordination in Japan. Postcards can also be sent via the closest UNESCO regional office. Location of EVS: Estonia, Tartu (see in details http://www.tartu.ee) Host/Coordinating organisation: EUYA (see in details http://ec.europa.eu/youth/evs/aod/hei_form_en.cfm?EID=28000199842) Duration of EVS: from June 2011 to December 2011 or January 2012 (upon agreement) Summary of the project: The role of a volunteer within the present project is to facilitate HO in supporting and developing international media project iloveculture.eu in a host country; which means that the main area of his/her work is related to multimedia registrations of the youth activities taking place in the country. The main focus will be done on the registration of international events implemented in the frame of European programmes. HO will equip volunteer with the basic tools for this such as a camera and its additional facilities. Weekly volunteer will have 1–2 full-day trips (i.e. “fieldwork”) to different youth organisations and/or current youth projects in order to make multimedia reportages. Particularly, volunteer will shoot short movies, make pictures, and interview the participants of the activities/organisations. The methodology of this project is guided by the principle of gradual immersion into the local environment and tasks: for the first month the volunteer supported by a mentor will start doing media registration in a host city; then he/she will do first trips with the mentor to the partner organisations of HO located in other cities; finally, volunteer will be able to visit other organisation independently. On arrival back to Tartu, volunteer will edit collected material and upload it to iloveculture.eu platform and other web resources. Apart from this, the volunteer will be involved into some other activities within the HO in order to feel as a part of its team. Moreover, volunteer will have time to develop his/her own project and preferably prepare some workshops on projectrelated topics (multimedia, journalism, etc.) for locals. Such kind of workshops will enable volunteer to share his/her skills and achievements acquired during the project. Practical arrangements and the timetable: In sum, volunteerʼs involvement will not exceed 30–35 hours weekly (including language training): ~40% of that time will be spent on the fieldwork; ~20% on editing the material gathered during the trips; ~20% helping HO with its activities; ~10% on developing own project and/or leading the workshops for locals; and ~10% on language classes. Volunteer can spend the weekends at his/her will; in addition, he/she will get 2 extra-day-off each month foreseen within terms of EVS action. This proportion of the activities was designed considering volunteerʼs interests: the “tripping” and “stationary” activities should be kept in balance in order to diverse volunteerʼs tasks and make him/her feel comfortable. 2 Profile of the potential candidate: (a) According to EVS criteria: young people aged between 18 and 30. Volunteer with fewer opportunities can participate from the age of 16. (b) According to the concrete project: a volunteer should have good socials skills, and be responsible and flexible, because his/her tasks are closely related to interpersonal communication. Due to the same reason at least a good communication level of English is required. The skills in multimedia can be considered as an advantage; however, the motivation to learn these skills is still the prime criterion. The volunteer should also be prepared to travel independently within the host county.
