TC VISUALLY! ✨

The training course “VISUALLY – A guide to reach youth through visuals” was held between Tuesday 4th October and Tuesday 11th October in the mountainous village of Eco dos Teixos, Casaio up in the mountain range which separates the regions of Galicia and Castilla y Leon. The 24 participants hailed from a variety of European nations. Apart from 3 Maltese participants Fabian Mercieca, Lynden Ellul and Thelma Bonello, the training course also included youth workers and educators from Spain, Portugal, Poland, Italy, Greece, Romania, Germany, Estonia and Latvia. The training course was hosted by Ticket2Europe with the support of the SGI network funded by the Spanish National Agency Injuve and funded by the Erasmus+ programme under the Key Action 1: Learning Mobility of Individuals.
Picture
Upon arrival, participants had an ice-breaking session to get to know each other. Throughout the 6 full training days at the heart of this project the participants went through intensive training days with around 6 hours sessions a time split with appropriate break slots. For everyone to understand the dynamics of the group, in the beginning of the training course, the participants were asked to share the contexts they come from, their experiences in relation to visual facilitation and other realities such as the places they want to visit or that they went to.
Picture
Throughout the course the participants learned a variety of methods and skills related to Visual Facilitation which can be used in their roles as youth workers, youth leaders and teachers but also in other work. Participates were given a set of markers: black for boldness, yellow for highlighting and grey for shading and slowly but surely started to learn to draw through various sessions such as the Visual ABC, Essential 8 and Visual…..What? Among other skills the participants learned about the objectives of visual facilitation, principles of visual facilitation, the fundamentals of non-formal education and a multitude of visual facilitation methods including those related to fonts, colouring, spacing, designing and many others. Finally the group was split in teams of 3 so that 3-5 visual facilitation templates per group were produced. Some of the templates were also digitalized on drawing tablets!

In the evenings, specific delegations cooked a typical meal representing their counties, for Malta it was the traditional Maltese Timpana and on the same night Vastlakukkel (an Easter dessert) was served by Estonia: an appropriate pairing going back to the start of MUYA that has its first contacts from EUYA (Estonian UNESCO Youth Association).
Picture
Saturday was the day dedicated to the local discovery and the participants were taken for an 8-hour 20km long trek in the mountains. On this trek participants were taken deep into the forest to see the typical Celtic trees that have roots that are so intertwined that it is unclear how many trees are in the forest, the local tour guides from Eco dos Teixos, Elba and Pedro explained. In the evening a local Galician dinner was organized by the Spanish team - a much needed energy boost after the day long trek!

The final evaluation of the VISUALLY training course highlighted the fact that at the beginning most participants were not exactly sure of the journey they were embarking on. However, as time passed, it became obvious that a lot of thought and preparation went into the build up to this training course. The trainers Jaanika Siiroja & Olalla González together with the helping team were all very well prepared. Olalla, considered this training course as her baby project as it was the first held in her home region of Galicia which was 2 years in the making due the original planned dates of 2020.

LARP (Live Action Role Play Game) is a combination of game, simulation and improvised theatre. Educational LARPs consist of a storytelling part in which the context and the world that participants operate in is described, the creation of characters that participants become and the rules of the game that everyone plays. LARPs can also involve some additional elements like props, scenography and intrigues that together create the complete story.
This story lets participants experience unknown and play the game in the way that emphasis valuable content, as well as develop their competences: knowledge, skills and attitudes. The concept of LARP is well known around the world, but can it be used for educational proposes? Educational LARPs are based on the achievements of different types of LARPs: chamber LARPs, Nordic LARPs, or simply drama theater and simulation methods, but how can we adopt it to the learning objectives of participants.

However, methodology adopted to the context of youth work and Erasmus+ program is not yet developed. We will change it. During this training we will adopt the eduLARP methodology to be used in international youth work in the context of Erasmus + program. After the training participants will be able to run and design LARP scenarios that tackle social problems and civic education.

Training course is dedicated to experienced youth workers and trainers who have previous experience in facilitation of non-formal education activates and are working directly with young people in their countries. Previous experience in LARP is not required.

Interested applicants are to fill the participation form here by 1st March 2020. For any further queries, please get in touch on reece@muya.info.

What is Capoeira?

13/1/2020

Comments

The following is an article written by Clifford Galea; one of the participants who attended the Erasmus+ training course titled "Combating the Differences". During the project the participants learned about Capoeira and wanted to share their experience with our members and readers.

Capoeira and Our Experience

Together with Darine, Liliana and Mariano, I was chosen to participate in an Erasmus international project held in Kaunas in Lithuania between the 22nd of September till the 30th of this year 2019.

We didn’t know each other so well. But we clicked as from day one. We knew that it was gonna be a capoeira training course in order to combat the differences between us; hence capoeira is used in many countries now as it has become a tool which unites people, no matter their religion, colour or race.

I must admit i never tried it before and i can say the same for all the rest of the group members. Upon arrival, we met with other international participants and luckily enough, all seemed to be quiet nice and warm hearted. This was confirmed throughout the whole week and can re confirm it today, as we still kept contact through a Facebook group where we talk daily.

This project highlighted the fact that nowadays, there are numerous challenges that European societies are facing. One of the more severe ones is the marginalization of young people coming from disadvantaged backgrounds; can it be due to different cultures and mentalities or also due to religious beliefs. Youngsters with behavior disorders and
dysfunctional backgrounds are often insecure and self-doubting, face discrimination, negative stereotypes, and increased social barriers. Not only that, myself i took the opportunity to talk about my past of drug addiction which to many people can be a taboo and also an undebatable subject. But through my explanation and also by being myself, i
really felt loved and totally accepted as after all this is life; everyone can have his pitfalls but everyone can rise up again and be a good person. After all, talking about addiction; it’s not something you choose to do as many people believe; it is a disease. So this project also served to share our knowledge and to pass on our experiences from life.

One of the ways to help them feel more confident is actually capoeira. Capoeira is an afro-Brazilian martial art that incorporates game, music, and dance. It has previously been used as a therapeutic activity that proved to be a huge success in empowering troubled people and bringing community members closer together. There were times when capoeira was prohibited in some countries but fortunately enough, it became legal later on. One reason for this was, because powerful people didn’t want to see people being so happy and united together. This shows that capoeira can really affect people positively.

To tackle this social exclusion problem, youth organizations from Hungary, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Turkey, Malta, and Lithuania have united for the project "Combating The Differences". The project’s aimed to give youth workers, the training necessary to be able to lead capoeira therapy sessions or at least to speak about in our home country groups that capoeria exists and it can be so beneficial...thus giving hope to others that there are ways and means how to really combat the differences.

The main objectives of this project were: - to promote capoeira as an inclusive and therapeutic activity, to give youth workers the appropriate knowledge about capoeira and also some practice, its philosophy, physical and musical sides of capoeira. We also had to come up with capoeira games in which everyone can participate and we did these games with school children.

Through this project, we, the participants increased our social awareness, skills, and multilingualism as of course, everyone shares his basic words in different languages even through daily organised cultural nights by all the participants from different countries including Malta. We are very happy that we participated in this erasmus project thanks also to the local non- profit organisation MUYA; we think we learnt a lot; we grew more mature, we acquired new knowledge and experience and this, we would like to share with others.

Attached are instructions about Capoeira, explaining how you can carry out your own inclusive capoeira session.

The training course is designed for youth workers, youth leaders, educators, trainers, teachers, NGO volunteers and members. Project Description:
During the training we want to discuss and find out, how participative youth work looks like in the different European countries and regional contexts. How can we strengthen or introduce participative youth work in our regions? What could we improve and how?

Since 2017 KINDERVEREINIGUNG Leipzig e.V. coordinates the project wir weit weg in which pupils that do not strive for higher education, develop international youth exchanges supported by so called “coaches international” (young adults, mainly university students). The results and experiences were mostly positive. During these years we have been confronted with various questions and expectations from schools, social workers in the schools, apprenticing companies, partners and funding organisations that result from the participatory approaches in the field of youth work and non-formal education.

Together with eight partner organisations from different European countries who are active in the field of youth work, we want to discuss these questions and expectations as well as exchange experiences, methods and examples of good-practice within participatory youth work. Additionally we aim to strengthen the contacts with our partner organisations and develop future cooperation and projects during the training.

With this training course we would like to discover connection of quest games with soft skills development. The training aims to provide youth workers & youth leader with tools, frameworks and space to create and playtest educational portable quest rooms and outdoor quests that foster soft skill development in young people. The training course is designed for youth leaders, youth workers, trainer, teachers, educators, NGO volunteers, game enthusiasts. Ideally participants are involved in youth work or education of young people daily/weekly.
