Between 6th-9th June a group of Maltese participated in the 7th and final Grundtvig Mobility visit within the “European Partnership on Adult Education and Mobility for Social Inclusion (EPAEMSI)” project, co-funded by the European Commission through the Lifelong Learning Programme in Wolverhampton (United Kingdom). This event was hosted by Engage Youth Empowerment Services (EYES), an organisation catering for socio-economically disadvantaged youth, aiming to keeping them away from the streets and getting into gangs through various youth activities. The Maltese delegation included Ms. Annabelle Cauchi from the Deaf People Association, Ms. Sarah Agius – the interpreter from Sign Language Interpreter Service, Ms. Teshai Wayne from Young Women Christian Association and the group leaders Ms. Thelma Bonello and Ms. Rodianne Cassar from Malta UNESCO Youth Association. The two-year European partnership project concluded in Wolverhampton aimed at using the experience of the seven partner organisations on social inclusion and active participation of adult learners from disadvantaged social groups in order to promote and improve social inclusion through education, in particular non-formal and informal education. The host organisation welcomed adult learners from disadvantaged social groups from Malta, Spain, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Italy and the United Kingdom.
During the mobility visit in Wolverhampton, the participants took part in a series of activities focussed on social inclusion through education. The event kicked off with the presentation of the hosting organisation and its main projects and was then followed by the simulation of the best practice of the hosting organisation: “the theatre of the oppressed”. Finally, the experience came to an end with the intercultural celebration prepared by the adult learners for the members of the public and local organisations. Ms. Annabelle Cauchi, one of the participants, shared her feedback about the experience in the UK: “through different activities, we learned a great deal about social inclusion and about the participation of adults from disadvantaged social groups. As a Deaf person, I used the services of an interpreter who joined us on this trip, which helped me to contribute to this project as an active participant. Otherwise, without the services of the sign language interpreter, I would not have been able to participate as I would not have been able to follow what the other participants were saying. It was also a rich intercultural experience, as delegates had the opportunity to celebrate their culture by introducing their respective country and their traditional food.” For more information about the project you may also visit the projects website www.epaemsi.eu or contact Malta UNESCO Youth Association by sending an email to info@muya.info. Trainers know what they were saying & Doing. The chemistry between the countries was amazing. Location was beautiful and Sessions were perfectly organized with a lot of food for tough. The thinking hats were something that i know already, but the way that they were presented makes more sense to me. The session when we had to invent something than we had to sell it was nice. Simple things that not even in a million years they would come up to your mind we had done them and sold them. Learning some words in different languages and improving my English Karen : This is my experience in Estonia following and participating in the entrepreneurship course organised by Shokkin Group. We were a nice group of people coming from mixed backgrounds. Most of us have precarious jobs or are jobless. We acquired skills to analyse our entrepreneurial potential through group work over a week in Valkla Rand. I could appreciate the diversity of participants' views and ideas. This is my first experience in attending such EU funded cross border and multinational courses. Ryan : First Of all i want to say a big thanks to pavel birgit and jana for all what that they teach us trough this tc. So... For me was very helpful cause with those tools that i learned and practice i can used them in my career and to develop it easily in the future. Application Form: http://www.muya.info/uploads/5/3/4/5/5345324/participants_form.docx The Universal Declaration of Human Rights should serve as inspiration in addressing migration issues12/7/2013 In light of what has happened in the past few days in Malta with regards to the push-back policy, the government’s decision and actions and the national debate that has been going on with regards to this issue, Malta UNESCO Youth Association would like to primarily refer to the UNESCO principles promoting the respect of human rights, specifically the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
This declaration arose directly from the experience of one of the Second World War and represents global expression of rights to which all human beings are entitled. A declaration that inspired a rich body of international human rights treaties, which include the human rights which lie at the basis and the heart of the Maltese and European Constitution. We would like to express our continued commitment towards this declaration and encourage our government and other institutions to keep this declaration in mind and allow it to serve as inspiration in addressing the issues in this regard and work effortlessly towards achieving the universal enjoyment of human rights. Malta UNESCO Youth Association, fully understands that our country, Malta is small and is indeed facing big challenges in hosting the large number of migrants landing on our shores in the decent and humane environment that they deserve like any other human being, nonetheless, we strongly believe that intra-religious and intra-cultural understanding will bring us closer towards a thorough comprehension of the real problems behind migration and the championing of tangible solutions. Our organisation fully condemns any actions that promote push-back whether they are taken by the Government or any other institution. We strongly believe that a sense of solidarity, a genuine effort towards intra-cultural understanding and primarily the respect for human life as the basis of any decisions and actions taken within the political structures will allow for tangible solutions to be drawn up that tackle the challenges at their root rather than at their peripherals. "trip was a great experience where the cultures and ideas of different countries came together to discuss and live social inclusion in the true sense of the word." - Ms. Louisa Grech, Equal Partners Foundation A group of Maltese participated in a Grundtvig Mobility Visit in Cluj-Napoca (Romania). The event was hosted by the Ethnocultural Diversity Resource Center during the last week of May. This meeting was the third event within the ‘European Partnership on Adult Education and Mobility for Social Inclusion (EPAEMSI)’ project, co-funded by the European Commission through the Lifelong Learning Programme. The Maltese delegation consisted of Daniel Mifsud, Julian Portelli and Josef Cachia, all from Malta UNESCO Youth Association (MUYA); Louisa Grech, Thomas Buttigieg and Luke Allen from Equal Partners Foundation; Ronald Calleja from National Parents’ Society of Persons with Disability; and Teshai Wayne from Young Women’s Christian Association.
The two-year project aims at using the experience of the seven partner organisations on social inclusion and active participation of adult learners from disadvantaged social groups in order to promote and improve social inclusion through education, in particular non-formal and informal education. The host organisation welcomed adult learners from disadvantaged social groups from Malta, Spain, Poland, Slovenia, Italy and the United Kingdom. During the meeting in Romania, the participants took part in a series of activities focusing on social inclusion through education. They first participated in workshops on social inclusion and conflict resolution in multi-ethnic environments, which included a presentation by the Ethnocultural Diversity Resource Center on their best practices in the field of education for social inclusion. Participants also visited local activities for social inclusion including the visit to Bánffy Castle (a monument being restored involving disadvantaged groups) and to a sample of income generating activities run by disadvantaged people in rural areas. The experience culminated at the Belvedere hotel with a conference on non-formal education for social inclusion. This was followed by an intercultural celebration open to all participants, local NGOs and members of the public. For the Maltese participants it was a thoroughly positive learning experience. Ms. Wayne said “It was an eye opening experience. So much to learn...so little time”. This trip to Greece was truly life changing. We met so many new people and had such a great time. I could easily say it was one of the best weeks of my life. Greece; usually not known for its snowy mountains, and yet what might sound a little bit odd came true for five young members of the Malta UNESCO Youth Association and their team leader Alexander Thenner. The multilateral youth exchange “Winter Creativity – Ecology & Healthy living” was organised by the Greek NGO “Kids in Action” at the Seli Mountain from 4th to 12th March, 2013. Sakis Krezios, founding member of Kids in Action and part of the organising team explains the idea behind the project, “The aim was to provide young people with the possibility to experience living in the mountains. We encouraged them to develop mutual understanding for the environment and its preservation, an appreciation of healthy living and of a harmonious relationship with community and planet.” 72 participants from 12 countries (Bulgaria, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia and the UK) worked in six creative workshops on the topic ecology and healthy living. Special task forces were dedicated to animation, administration and waste management & energy saving. Furthermore, participants were provided with enough space for interaction with each other in order to discover the variety of cultural and other backgrounds and through that to foster their intercultural sensitivity. Participant Matthew Fenech speaking about his learning outcomes in the photography workshop, “I learned a lot especially how to use my camera’s settings to adapt to different surrounding environments. Ever since I came back to Malta I started to take more pictures than usual.”
For Michael Zammit the social aspects were more important, “This trip to Greece was truly life changing. We met so many new people and had such a great time. I could easily say it was one of the best weeks of my life.” The project was implemented and funded according to the European Commission’s Youth in Action Programme and carried out entirely based on the principles of non-formal education by qualified and experienced trainers, facilitators and support staff. MUYA Camping will take place between the 13th and 14th April, 2013.
